Deputising for chief reporter McKeating is not easy, so I may keep it brief.
This weeks changed team assembled on the back of a good draw against Mary’s last week and although beaten by today’s challengers last time (in the swamp), confidence was high to get a result.
Players out this week included Rudd, Mummery and Lundon. Players in or back included Gill and Jessup, the latter following an International trip and although only arriving home in the early hours, made the effort to get up and out to play apart in the game.
St Michaels lived up to the promise of pre-season, grass not cut since June and the showers were again COLD. The grass obviously plays a part for both teams, but one hopes that someone from Parks and Gardens can pull their finger out before next games.
So to the game. I said I’d keep it brief, a misplaced pass by Kinsella was intercepted by the left back, after about twenty mins, who passed it into the midfielder who’s speculative shot from 20 yards bent left, right, then left and again right before nestling into the top left corner or the otherwise perfect McGunnigles goal – in truth he had no chance at all for the shot. This was really the only true shot on goal at either end in the first half.
Half time saw Flabio read the riot act to a group of players including Kinsella, Jessup, and Richardson, citing that when the ball was lost the effort should be better placed trying to get it back rather than whinging and placing hands on hips. A rally was called and the desired effect seemed to materialise, with Waterloo better in the initial period of the second half. Half chances for Cregeen (drive across goal from left), Scanlon (header well saved), Cregeen again (follow up from keeper spill, that was somehow saved), Jessup (from distance) and Watkinson (from long cross).
They offered plenty, as they had a blend of good passing players, a tight defence and quick flank runners – however they did not have many chances after the goal.
Not many shining players in the game and I believe there is a lot to improve on, plenty of misplaced passes, many wrong choice passes and an abundance of poor control – and not just from today’s reporter, who incidentally knows more than anyone who is to blame for the defeat!
Regroup and conquer next week against Saltney. I’ll be calling long distance at 4.05pm for the result
